Abuja land dispute: Turai Yaradua floors Patience Jonathan in court

Turai-Patience
The cold war between two Nigerian “first-ladies”, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan and wife of late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, Turai, over a juicy plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, reached its feverish heights Thursday.
Their uncanny rivalry, which has exposed the country to public ridicule within the international circles, deepened after an Abuja High Court, presided over by Justice Peter Affen, declared that the disputed land where the incumbent “first-lady”, Patience, recently hosted her counterparts from other African countries, belonged to Turai Yar’Adua.
In his judgment, Justice Affen maintained that the Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, acted illegally when he revoked the Certificate of Occupancy for the land originally allocated to a Non-Governmental Organization, NGO, “The Registered Trustee of Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation, WYEF”, a pet project initiated by Turai, and re-awarded it to Patience Jonathan for the construction of a secretariat of the “First Ladies Peace Mission.”
According to the judge, “the said plot No. 1347 Cadastral Zone AOO, Central Business District, Abuja, was originally allocated to the plaintiff (WYEF) for the building of a public institution, a vocational training center, in-line with the provision of section 28(1) of the Land Use Act.
“The vocational center is for public purpose and the title deed of the disputed land cannot just be revoked on the premise of over-riding public interest.
“Public interest is not limited to the purpose of government alone, the purported revocation stands precariously, if at all it stands.
“Any revocation in the exercise of the power of the Minister under the Land Use Act must be within the confine or tenets of section 28(1) of the Act. More so, the defendant woefully failed to adduce evidence to support its claims of overriding public interest.
“Consequently, I uphold the submissions of the plaintiffs counsel and declare that the said revocation was done in bad-faith and is hereby nullified,” the judge added.
Reacting through her lawyer, Mrs Ima Okpongete , Mrs. Jonathan, contended that the presiding judge erred in law by returning the land to the former first lady, contrary to overriding public interest.
She said: “We are not satisfied with this judgment and we are going to appeal against it immediately.”
It will be recalled that in a bid to save the country from embarrassment over the lingering land dispute, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, earlier begged the court to allow him broker an out-of-court settlement deal for the warring “first-ladies”.

Gunmen in 50 Hilux vans destroy buildings, telecom masts in Borno

baga-ruination
Gunmen in their hundreds in a convoy of 50 Hilux vans attacked Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, yesterday evening, where they succeeded in burning down all public buildings like schools, hospitals/clinics, police stations and all telecommunications masts in the council headquarters.

Marte is about 150 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital which also shares borders with Baga and Chad Republic. It is also an epicentre of Boko Haram sect which had witnessed series of attacks and bombings.
A top police officer in Marte said: “The gunmen invaded the town at about 4p.m with over 50 Hilux 4-wheel drive vehicles armed with sophisticated weapons, chanting Allahu Akbar, meaning (God is Great) and started throwing Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, at all public structures without being challenged by security operatives.”
Another reliable source said: “Apart from the Lake Chad Development site, no other public structure remained standing in the town as all of them have been destroyed by the terrorists.”
Our correspondent gathered that the suspected terrorists had after the Baga carnage, issued a warning that Marte town would be their next target of attack.
No life was, however, lost as the terrorists had warned those working in the public buildings in the town to vacate before they struck.
Contacted, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Yuguda Abdullahi and his image maker, DSP Gideon Jubrin’s phones rang several times without response, but a top security officer who did not want his name mentioned confirmed the incident.

Nigerian Striker’s Teammate Found Dead In Sweden

Nigerian striker, Kennedy Igboananike has been hit with the news that his teammate and Swedish football club AIK’s Croatian goalkeeper, Ivan Turina, was found dead in his northern Stockholm apartment.

According to local media reports on Thursday, the police in Stockholm have ruled out foul play in the goal keeper’s death. He was said to have slept and failed to wake up.
“I can confirm that Ivan Turina is dead but there are no suspicions of crime,” police spokesman, Patrik Nuss, was quoted as saying. Police said they were called to Turina’s apartment early on Thursday morning.
Mr. Igboananike was last in action together with the deceased goalkeeper barely a week ago on April 26, when AIK got an away 2-1 victory over Gefle in a League game in which the Nigerian striker got the winning goal.
In a statement, the club said: “It’s with great sadness and shock that AIK Football can confirm that goalkeeper Ivan Turina died overnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
Ivan died suddenly in his sleep and there are no suspicions of a crime at this point in time.” The 32-year-old late Croatian goalkeeper signed for AIK in 2010 and played 65 league games for the Solna club. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
