IMSU Expel 60 Students with less than 1.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

No fewer than 60 students of the Imo State University,IMSU, Owerri, including some in their final year who made below 1.00 cumulative grade points average have been expelled from the institution, while students who made above 1.00 but fell below 1.5 grade points for the 2011/2012 session were reportedly
asked to repeat a session.

MYSCHOOL gathered from a reliable source that the action which caused tension and confusion in the institution was one of the policies introduced by the new Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, the immediate past Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

While some students hailed the new policy, others denounced it, urging the VC to rescind it.

A female victim of the new policy (name withheld) said, “my fate has been sealed as my parents would obviously disown me if the report gets to them, where will I start from?”

All efforts to reach Awuzie for comments proved abortive as he was said to be presiding over the University Senate meeting, but a source in his office
insisted that the former ASUU boss initiated the idea as part of his efforts to rescue the institution from the poor academic situation perpetrated by past
administrations.

He emphasized that the society would not be better if schools continue to churn out students who cannot defend their certificates, saying that with Awuzie presiding over the school affairs, the students must work hard to pass their examinations.

The Sad end of Africa’s youngest pilot

Sad end of Africa’s youngest pilot
Until tragedy struck, Flying Officer Ayuba Layelmenson, co-pilot of the Air Force Alfa jet that crashed in Niger Republic recently, was a beacon of hope for his family. An officer pilot at the age of 24, the sky was literally his roof in the flying profession. As a matter of fact, Ayuba, a native of Lapan in Gombe State, had bagged an award as the youngest African pilot from a Flying Academy in America.

By sheer cruel fate, his mother had been struck with stroke and the family had looked forward to an improved life given the bright future of their son, who was the youngest of five children. His father, Mr Job Layelmenson is however healthy. But all the expectations crashed with the Air Force jet.
Ayuba and the pilot of the jet, Squadron Leader Benjamin Ado, were stationed in Niger Republic, to fly some soldiers to war-torn Mali, for peacekeeping. The jet had hardly taken off, when it crashed and the two pilots died in the accident. Speaking to Sunday Sun, a relation of the late Flying officer, who did not want his name in print, said Ayuba’s death devastated the family because everybody believed he held out hope of a brighter future for them.
The relation who is a Police officer attached to Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan in Lagos, disclosed that the families of the two pilots had requested for the release of the bodies to them but NAF authorities turned down the request. According to him, the Air Force based the refusal on its decision to give them heroes’ burial. He told Sunday Sun that the two military pilots would be buried at the National Cemetery, Abuja, on Tuesday. The pilot, Squadron Leader Ado, hailed from Benue State.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes confirms his retirement

The former England international initially quit in 2011 to take up a position on United's coaching staff, only to return in January 2012 after admitting he had missed playing.

But the 38-year-old will follow manager Sir Alex Ferguson out of the Old Trafford door at the end of this season.

"Yes I am finally hanging up my boots for good," Scholes said.

"Playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United, under the greatest manager of all time, has been an honour."

Injuries have hampered the veteran this season but he is set to make his 498th Premier League appearance for United against Swansea on Sunday when Old Trafford's trophy presentation party will double up as a bumper retirement bash, ahead of a final-day trip to West Brom.

Scholes has so far made 716 appearances for the Red Devils and scored the last of his 155 goals against Wigan last September.

"Paul is a truly unbelievable player," said Ferguson.

"He has always been fully committed to this club and it has been a real privilege to work with him for so many years.

"Paul will play at Old Trafford on Sunday against Swansea and will collect an unbelievable but well-deserved 11th Premier League medal."

Court Sends 20 Students To Prison Over Murder Of Lecturer

Twenty students of the Kogi State Polytechnic have been remanded in prison custody by a Lokoja Magistrates Court over rioting and murder of a senior lecturer of the institution, Mr Nathaniel Abimaje.

During the court session yesterday, the police prosecutor, Samuel Ikutanwa, told the court that on April 19, the accused persons incited some unidentified students of the institution to riot over the setting up of a panel to look into the case of a student who was involved in examination malpractice.

He told the court that the accused persons were armed with dangerous weapons such as axes, guns and cutlasses. He further alleged that the students went on rampage and stabbed Abimaje severally.

“They were protesting the setting up of a panel to look into the case of examination malpractice. During the rampage, the accused beat and stabbed Abimaje severally and left him in a pool of his blood. The lecturer was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, but died before he could receive medical attention,” Ikutanwa said.

The prosecutor said investigation revealed that a long-standing dispute between Igala and Ebira students in the institution also fuelled the crisis. He urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody.

The accused persons who were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, rioting and culpable homicide, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the accused, J.E. Usman Esq. asked the court to exercise its discretion and grant the accused bail on the ground that an accused is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

In his ruling Chief Magistrate Levi Animoku said the offence of culpable homicide which the accused were charged with carries death penalty under Section 221 of the Penal Code and was not bailable.

He said he had no discretion to exercise in the matter as the offence was a capital one, adding that Section 35(7)(a) of the 1999 constitution provides that presumption of innocence was not absolute, especially in a case of culpable homicide. Animoku ordered that the accused be remanded at Federal Prisons, Kabba, and adjourned the case to May 21 for further mention.
