From Boko Haram to Ombatse Militia

From Boko Haram to Ombatse Militia
Wale Sokunbi CURRENTS, 08111813039, walesokunbi2010@yahoo.com
Like a bolt from the blues, news of the emergence of yet another deadly militant group shot onto the national landscape last week. Identified by the bombastic name of Ombatse Militia Cult, and operating in Nasarawa State, the group members  signified notice of their intention to be taken seriously by the Nigerian authorities with their brazen murder of about 35 policemen in Alakyo
Village, which is less than 10 kilometres to the Nasarawa State capital, Lafia. Some officials of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) were also killed in the incident that is tantamount to nothing but a dirty slap on the Nigerian government, the nation’s security agencies and, indeed, the entire country.
Apparently, the Ombatse Militia had been terrorizing the people of Nasarawa for some time, but somehow, its operations stayed well off the national security radar.  But, with the killing of the policemen and other security agents in Alakyo, the Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, had no choice but to make an official report of the group’s activities to the Presidency in Abuja.
In the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan who was away to Namibia last Wednesday, Al-Makura told Vice President Namadi Sambo how he had convened a security meeting on the activities of the militia group in Nasarawa where it was decided that security agents in the state would raid the shrines operated by the group in Alakyo and arrest its members.
But, the plan apparently leaked to the cult group, which then ambushed the security agents. At the end of the bloody encounter, 35 policemen were confirmed killed by the cult group with several operational vehicles burnt. About 30 corpses of security operatives killed during the ambush were initially confirmed to have been recovered, while many of the 90 policemen deployed for the operation are yet to be accounted for. Twenty-eight of the missing agents were, however, released by the group last Friday. President Goodluck Jonathan immediately cut short his state visit to Namibia. He met with his security chiefs last Friday and, as expected, ordered an investigation.
Since that gruesome incident, many people have been understandably worried about the matter.  While some of the operatives that survived the ambush alleged that the militia group might have charmed the murdered policemen, some security chiefs and the Niger State Governor, Aliyu Babangida, have attributed the massacre to failure of intelligence and inexperience on the part of those who directed the operation.
The mindless slaughter of so many policemen in the Nasarawa incident is a tragedy. Tufiaka!  Ee wo! Ye pa ri pa! Ombatse Militia has joined Boko Haram in wanton killing of Nigeria’s security agents! .Abomination is now walking on four legs in Nigeria, in broad daylight.  Policemen have become like mere flies, killed at will by militants.
If there had been any argument up till now over the fact that Nigerian policemen and other security agents have become endangered species in the hands of militant groups in the country, the Nasarawa incident has rested it. Anyone that did not come to that disheartening conclusion following the massacre of security agents in Bama, Borno State, last week, must surely be convinced by the latest incident in Nasarawa.
It is noteworthy that the image of policemen as overlords that the authorities needed to convince us are our friends, on account of their general high-handedness, unfriendliness and wickedness, is now giving way to that of the operatives as pitiable sitting ducks for militant group across the country.
These militant groups apparently have an upper hand over the police, and they seem to derive joy from killing policemen. This is a scenario that Nigeria cannot afford. Policemen should not be targets of all manner of disgruntled people in the country, especially when the nation is not officially at war.
Apart from addressing the failure of intelligence and inexperience of security operatives deployed for this assignment mentioned by the Niger State Governor, the police and other security officials need to tackle the problem of infiltration of their ranks by militants. Otherwise, how did the matter of a raid to be carried out by the operatives become known to the Ombatse Militia to the extent that the cult group was able to muster superior fire power to rout the security agents and send them to early graves? How did the Ombatse group know about the planned police raid, without the police getting a hint of the ambush planned by the group? Is this a case of the Ombatse being more adept at intelligence gathering than our police and the Directorate of Security Service?
One other thing that appears glaring is that the Police Command in Nasarawa did not appear to have a full grasp of the strength of the Ombatse militia. Even if it did, as the number of operatives deployed for the raid suggests, the Command obviously did not envisage that the cult boys could run over its team so easily. The team was apparently unprepared for the challenge of its planned raid of the group.
As Governor Aliyu put it at the opening of the Geo-political Security Awareness workshop in Minna, recently, intelligence gathering and security operations require silence, speed and surprise. The planned raid of the Ombatse group lacked all three.  It was not at all silent, and it was no surprise to the militia, which was apparently well prepared to confront them.
Serious security operations like the one that went awry in Nasarawa should be handled with all seriousness. They require careful planning and could be postponed if there is the slightest chance that they might have leaked to the targets.
Again, security agents must employ the best of equipment available for such operations. It is saddening to hear after the massacre that the state command could have asked for patrol jets and Armoured Personnel carriers from Abuja, but failed to do so, apparently because it expected to have an easy ride over the cultists.
This type of approach to such serious security problem must be avoided in future. With what has happened, one can only sympathise with the victims and the families they left behind. It is so sad to lose loved ones to avoidable deaths such as this.
Nigeria Police, which has been losing its men in droves of recent, deserves to be encouraged by the authorities. There is obviously need for training and retraining of officers charged with security duties.  Critical operations such as the one in Nasarawa should involve higher levels of police authority, especially at the planning stage. Our security agencies must put their best foot forward at all times.
The Ombatse cult has dared the Federal Government of Nigeria. An attack on policemen by anyone in a country is an attack against the entire country. What the Ombatse Militia has done is to run its hands over the blunt knife-edge of Nigeria’s security agencies, and dared them to bring it to book.
Nigeria must not fail to respond appropriately to this open challenge by the cult. The militia group has to be unmasked and made to account for this heinous crime, otherwise, Nigeria risks similar deadly groups rising up and killing policemen and other security agents with impunity all over the country.
In addition, the problems of unemployment, poverty, devaluation of our moral values and other ills that make a life of criminality attractive to youths should be addressed. Idle minds and hungry stomachs make a volatile mix that is the Devil’s ideal playground.

RIM Set to Make BBM [Blackberry Messenger] Available for Andriod & iOS Device Soonest

If you’re already a fan of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), we’ve got some exciting news designed to make it easier for you to connect with your entire mobile social network. BlackBerry plans to make BBM, our wildly popular mobile messaging service, available for the first time to iOS® and Android™ users this summer, (subject to approval by Google Play and the Apple App Store, as applicable). This means that, once available, you can welcome your friends and family using these other mobile platforms to connect over BBM and share in the Team BlackBerry love.

As we’ve chronicled on our Inside BlackBerry blog for some time now, BBM set the standard for mobile instant messaging with fast and reliable service and an added layer of engagement with delivered and read statuses. You’ve shared with us your stories about how BBM has kept you connected when it mattered most to you. Upon release of the multi-platform BBM service, you can broaden that real-time connection to friends and colleagues on other supported mobile platforms.

In the first version of multi-platform BBM, iOS and Android users are expected to be able to experience the following BBM features:

The immediacy of BBM chats
Multi-person chats
Voice note sharing
BlackBerry Groups, where BBM users are able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more

The team here at BlackBerry has definitely been working hard to bring the much-adored BBM experience to a wider group of mobile users. In a recent press release at BlackBerry Live 2013, Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, Software Product Management and Ecosystem, at BlackBerry had this to say:

“For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service. BBM has always been one of the most engaging services for BlackBerry customers, enabling them to easily connect while maintaining a valued level of personal privacy. We’re excited to offer iOS and Android users the possibility to join the BBM community.”

BBM Quick Facts:
* More than 60 million monthly active users
* More than 51 million daily active users who are connecting with friends or colleagues an average of one and a half hours every day.
* BBM users send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps
* Almost half of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds of being received; indicating how truly engaged BBM customers are

Today, BlackBerry also announced BBM Channels, a new social engagement platform within BBM that will allow customers to connect with the businesses, brands, celebrities and groups they are passionate about. BlackBerry plans to add support for BBM Channels as well as voice and video chatting for iOS and Android later this year, subject to approval by the Apple App Store and Google Play. If approved by Apple and Google, the BBM app will be available as a free download in the Apple® App StoreSM and Google Play store. Additional details about system requirements and availability will be announced closer to the launch.

That’s some pretty big news, indeed!!!

Federal Government declares State of Emergency in 3 States over Islamic Extremist Attacks

In a terse show of force just a few minutes ago, President Goodluck Jonathan ignored the advise of the Nigerian Governors Forum given yesterday and declared a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

This announcement was made at 7pm during a 15-minutes address to the nation that streamed live on the network services of the Nigeria Television Authority, the Voice of Nigeria and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

“The activities of insurgents have been intolerable,” the president said. “Some parts of Borno State have been taken over by groups. The insurgents and terrorists prevent government from fulfilling its duties. No matter what it takes, we will win this war against terrorism.”

It will be recalled that his special adviser on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati had on Sunday denied any plans to declare a state of emergency.

Police uncover 78-yr-old woman’s corpse in son’s cupboard in Owerri.

THE Imo State Police Command has recovered the remains of a 78-year-old woman, Mrs. Lucy Osigweh, who was declared missing in 2003.
Making the revelation, yesterday, state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina, disclosed that the woman’s lifeless body was found in a large cupboard inside a shrine located in her son’s private room.
Katsina said: “The missing woman’s lifeless body was found in a village called Ezuru Umuagwu, Ejemekwuru, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.”
According to him, “the corpse of the 78-year-old Mrs. Osigweh, earlier declared missing in 2003, was found in a large cupboard inside a shrine of a private room in a circumstance depicting ritual practice.
“The embalmed body, which was kept in that condition for about 10 years, was believed to have been placed in the warehouse by her son, Chief Chimezie Osigweh, a 64-year-old retired school principal.”
The Imo police boss said there was every reason to believe that the late woman’s son is a member of a sect, adding: “Preliminary assessment of the scene of crime revealed that the late woman must have been murdered by her son for ritual purpose.”
Katsina also said members of the sect used to hold secret nocturnal meetings in the place to enhance their occultic powers.
“The principal suspect, Chief Chimezie Osigweh, who is the son of the woman, has been arrested and is making useful statement to the police,” the CP said.
Although Katsina did not say how the police got wind of the crime, feelers from the late woman’s maiden home, Amakohia, Awa, Oguta local council area, showed that they made the startling discovery.
A villager, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, said that angered by the unresolved and inexplicable disappearance of their relation from her marital home, some villagers decided to double check earlier stories bandied by Osigweh.
According to a villager, “on getting to Ejemekwuru, our people demanded to know why their relations had remained missing for 10 years. Her son told our villagers that his mother was mad at a point and ran away to unknown place.
“Apparently not satisfied with the response, as well as the nonchalant attitude allegedly exhibited by her son, the villagers went beserk, destroying things in sight and ended up spotting the large cupboard containing the remains of their loved one.
“With this startling discovery, the villagers quickly lodged a complaint with the police who subsequently swung into action.”

The Sad end of Africa’s youngest pilot

Sad end of Africa’s youngest pilot
Until tragedy struck, Flying Officer Ayuba Layelmenson, co-pilot of the Air Force Alfa jet that crashed in Niger Republic recently, was a beacon of hope for his family. An officer pilot at the age of 24, the sky was literally his roof in the flying profession. As a matter of fact, Ayuba, a native of Lapan in Gombe State, had bagged an award as the youngest African pilot from a Flying Academy in America.

By sheer cruel fate, his mother had been struck with stroke and the family had looked forward to an improved life given the bright future of their son, who was the youngest of five children. His father, Mr Job Layelmenson is however healthy. But all the expectations crashed with the Air Force jet.
Ayuba and the pilot of the jet, Squadron Leader Benjamin Ado, were stationed in Niger Republic, to fly some soldiers to war-torn Mali, for peacekeeping. The jet had hardly taken off, when it crashed and the two pilots died in the accident. Speaking to Sunday Sun, a relation of the late Flying officer, who did not want his name in print, said Ayuba’s death devastated the family because everybody believed he held out hope of a brighter future for them.
The relation who is a Police officer attached to Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan in Lagos, disclosed that the families of the two pilots had requested for the release of the bodies to them but NAF authorities turned down the request. According to him, the Air Force based the refusal on its decision to give them heroes’ burial. He told Sunday Sun that the two military pilots would be buried at the National Cemetery, Abuja, on Tuesday. The pilot, Squadron Leader Ado, hailed from Benue State.

Court Sends 20 Students To Prison Over Murder Of Lecturer

Twenty students of the Kogi State Polytechnic have been remanded in prison custody by a Lokoja Magistrates Court over rioting and murder of a senior lecturer of the institution, Mr Nathaniel Abimaje.

During the court session yesterday, the police prosecutor, Samuel Ikutanwa, told the court that on April 19, the accused persons incited some unidentified students of the institution to riot over the setting up of a panel to look into the case of a student who was involved in examination malpractice.

He told the court that the accused persons were armed with dangerous weapons such as axes, guns and cutlasses. He further alleged that the students went on rampage and stabbed Abimaje severally.

“They were protesting the setting up of a panel to look into the case of examination malpractice. During the rampage, the accused beat and stabbed Abimaje severally and left him in a pool of his blood. The lecturer was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, but died before he could receive medical attention,” Ikutanwa said.

The prosecutor said investigation revealed that a long-standing dispute between Igala and Ebira students in the institution also fuelled the crisis. He urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody.

The accused persons who were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, rioting and culpable homicide, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the accused, J.E. Usman Esq. asked the court to exercise its discretion and grant the accused bail on the ground that an accused is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

In his ruling Chief Magistrate Levi Animoku said the offence of culpable homicide which the accused were charged with carries death penalty under Section 221 of the Penal Code and was not bailable.

He said he had no discretion to exercise in the matter as the offence was a capital one, adding that Section 35(7)(a) of the 1999 constitution provides that presumption of innocence was not absolute, especially in a case of culpable homicide. Animoku ordered that the accused be remanded at Federal Prisons, Kabba, and adjourned the case to May 21 for further mention.

Nigeria to host 2014 World Economic Forum on Africa

Cape Town (South Africa) – Nigeria is to host the 24th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa in Abuja next year.
The Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, made the announcement at the close of the 23rd edition of the WEF in Cape Town, South Africa on Friday.
Okonjo-Iweala thanked the WEF for choosing Nigeria as the next host, expressing the readiness of the country to make the next edition as exciting as possible.
She said that the choice of Nigeria was appropriate given its position and huge economic potential.
“I think we epitomise a lot of things about Africa. We have the excitement, the passion, the entrepreneurship, the private sector drive and the glow for the future.
“But we also epitomise all of the difficult challenges of the continent such as infrastructure deficit, governance issues, corruption and transparency,” she said.
According to her, a combination of these opportunities and challenges in one country makes Nigeria the most exciting place to be on the continent.
Okonjo-Iweala said that the future of Africa was bright, judging by the commitment and passion demonstrated by participants in the forum, especially the Young Global Leaders, who represented the youths of the continent.
The Director General, Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Mr Frank Nweke Jnr, said that Nigeria was excited to be the host of the next WCF.
He said that President Goodluck Jonathan had already mandated the team to organise a successful forum. (NAN)

A Man Arrested with N106m Fake Condoms, Drugs

NAFDAC arrested a trader, Olisaemeka Osefoh, for importation of counterfeit medicines into Nigeria.

The suspect was also arrested with fake Rough Rider condoms.

SN learnt that the estimated street value of the goods was N106, 210, 000.

Some of the drugs seized include, Mycoten cream, Neurogesic ointment and Skineal cream.

In his statement, the suspect said he was in partnership with a cartel based in China, where the products were sourced, before being shipped to Nigeria.

The Director General of the agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, while parading the suspect, said Osefoh was arrested after a tip off.

He said the suspect had also given investigators information on how the goods were illegally cleared through Tincan Island Port, Lagos.

He said, “Operatives of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate raided a warehouse located at Progressive Traders Market known for the sales of jewellery and cosmetic products.

“During the raid at Trade Fair Complex, Badagry Expressway, Lagos, 158 cartons of Skineal cream, 43 cartons of Funbact- A Cream, 719 cartons of Mycoten Cream, 131 cartons of Neurogesic ointment, 56 cartons of Rough Rider Condoms, 20 cartons of Iman Luxury Powder and 205 cartons of Heal Balm were impounded.”

Orhii said investigations revealed that drug counterfeiters no longer specialised only in foreign products but also in Nigerian-made drugs.

He said most of the fake drugs being imported were from China while India was second. He however said the agency was having talks with the Chinese Embassy on the issue.

He said, “I can say for sure that most of the fake drugs we have in the country now are from China while India comes second. The Indian government is giving us full cooperation but we are still having talks with China.

“NAFDAC is working with the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria to track down the criminal company in China that connived with the suspect to ship the fake medicine into the country.”

The NAFDAC boss seized the opportunity to warn landlords who rent out their warehouses to dealers in fake drugs.

Okorocha Speaks: Evil men ’ll not govern Imo again

Evil men ’ll not govern Imo again –Okorocha
From GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, Owerri
The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has vowed that evil and corrupt politicians will never again govern the state, saying the people will not allow them to ascend to positions of authority again. This was even as he assured that his successor would be a progressive-minded person and not those who he said were driven by selfish motives and not concerned about the welfare of the masses.

Okorocha who was speaking during a press conference at the WODDI centre in Owerri, to mark the Imo Freedom Day celebration and the second anniversary of his administration, noted that May 6 represented the day that the people of Imo regained their freedom from the bondage of evil men who had held the masses down in poverty and misrule. According to Okorocha, the celebration became imperative to honour the memories of the common people who fought gallantly, with some losing their lives in the process to demand for change and good governance in the state.
He stated further that, “at times due to the pressure and attacks coming from our people who are sponsored to fight Okorocha, I feel like quitting but for the love I have for my people I still continue to move on to salvage the state from the grips of corrupt and evil men. “I didn’t come into power so that people can praise me, or to make wealth for myself but that I might change the life of my people.”
Also speaking in the same vein, the Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere, who was one of those imprisoned during the elections, described the event as a day that signified total liberty for the people of the state. Madumere assured that the Okorocha-led administration would continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people. “I was one of those that paid huge sacrifice for this day to be, I was incarcerated and made to suffer unjustly but today we can say that we are no more under bondage, we are truly free.”
The Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri, in his speech, noted that in the last two years, the state had experienced great changes across the communities. The royal father commended the governor and his team for remaining consistent with their electoral promise of rescuing the state from misrule.

Pastor Must Offer Sacrifices For Killing Snake – Anambra Community

An altercation has ensued between members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and Umuoji community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State over the killing of a snake in the community by the Overseer of the Mercy Throne Assembly, Umuoji, Rev Jude Chubueze.

The community believes Chibueze had desecrated the land by killing the snake, as snake killing in the area is a taboo, and they had gone ahead to seal his church with palm fronds. The matter has been taken to the Anambra State Police command which is trying to mediate between the two parties to avoid a breakdown of law and order, and assure a peaceful resolution to it. Reacting on the issue, members of PFN under the aegis of Umuoji Gospel Ministries Fellowship led by Pastor Celestine Ekpunobi, yesterday, described the tradition that forbids the killing of snake as barbaric, adding that such law should only concern the pagans.

Rev Chibueze said a snake stormed his house at night when members of his family were already sleeping. He said he heard his children screaming and rushed there to find a snake where his children had been sleeping. “When I got to their room, I saw a big snake lying with them and I had to kill it and threw it into the nearby bush. The following day, some community members marched to my house and accused me of killing their god. They beat me up mercilessly.
“They wrote a list of items amounting to N54,890 which they said I should buy to appease their god. Being a Christian, I told them that it is against my faith and more over, I killed a snake and not a human being.” One of the community leaders, Chief Paul Edekobi said, instead of the pastor doing what he earlier agreed to do with the community by providing the items, he dragged them to Ogidi Police Station where six of the community leaders were arrested. The Chief threatened that what he did was capable of wiping out his entire family if sacrifices were not made to appease the gods.
“We do not want to destroy his property and that is why we used the palm fronts to tie round the church to stop him from worshipping there for now,” Edekobi said.
But the pastor said: “What they are talking about is not tradition; they see the killing of a snake as a taboo in their world of idol worshipping and not same in Christian faith “If they do not desist from this act, our next port of call will be the court for the enforcement of our fundamental human rights.”

Late August last year, pop singer Akinmayokun May D Awodumila got the shock of his life when he learnt he had been dropped from Square records (P-Square record label) due to irreconcilable differences, he screamed blue murder, threatened litigation and countered by launching his own outfit Confam Entertainment; releasing singles and videos. Today, however, these two camps may have reconciled.
Come May 10, this writer has learnt May D’s highly anticipated album will drop and it features PSquare in a powerful collaboration called You want to know me.
The 20 tracked album titled Chapter one also features Tu face in No Body, K-Switch and Olamide in Kigbe and then Davido in Ur Eyes.
May D will be launching his album on May 26 at a live concert in Abuja with Davido, 2face Idibia, Iyanya, Olamide, Jaywon, Reminisce, K-Switch and many others in performance.
On August 21, Square Records boss Jude Okoye had sent out a statement which reads…
I, JUDE ‘ENGEES’ OKOYE of Square Records Limited and Northside Entertainment Limited hereby announces to the general public that Mr. Akinmayokun Awodumila, otherwise known as MAY D is no longer an artiste under the aforementioned outfits due to irreconcilable differences. We at Northside and Square records wish him all the best in his career and life.
The full details of their reconciliation are not immediately clear, what we do know however, is that May D does not intend going back to Square records. Or should he?

A Nigerian fighter jet taking part in military operations against al Qaeda-linked Islamic militants in Mali crashed in western Niger, killing its two crew, Niger and Nigerian officials said on Monday.
The incident marked the first casualties in Mali for Nigerian troops, which form the largest contingent in a West African regional force participating in the French-led campaign to drive Islamist rebels from the country's desert north, reports Reuters.

Air Commodore Yusuf Anas, spokesman for the Nigerian Air Force, said the plane was an Alpha jet stationed in Niger as part of a Nigerian squadron supporting the mission in Mali.
"An investigation is going on to find out what happened. They were on a normal routine flight about 60 km (37 miles) west of Niamey when something happened," Anas told Reuters.
Asked if there was any evidence of anti-aircraft fire, he said: "We don't know but it was inside Nigerien territory."
A Niger security source said the jet crashed near Dargol in the Tillabery region which borders Mali.
"The plane was not shot at. It was not in enemy territory so for now we are looking at maybe a mechanical problem," another security official from Niger, who asked not to be identified, said.

Students in Kano protest Against mass UTME failure

Kano – Hundreds of students, who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination on Monday in Kano staged a peaceful demonstration against  mass failure and withholding of their results.
The students stormed the premises of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria  in Kano on motorcycles around noon and carried placards and green leaves to show their anger.
Spokesman for the candidates, Haruna Maidabam, described the withholding of their results as a deliberate attempt to deny them the opportunity to further their studies.
According to him, more than 10, 000 students who sat for the examination in Kano metropolis have yet to access their results.
Maidabam said when the results were released last week, they went to the zonal office of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Kano (JAMB) to complain  but were directed to go and repeat the thumb printing for verification.
‘’There is no reason for any verification of thumb- print,’’ he said.
He called on the authorities concerned to do something urgently to address their predicament.
When contacted, the JAMB Zonal Coordinator, Hajiya Karimatu Abubakar, described the incident as unfortunate and attributed it to “some technical hitches”.

Abubakar said as soon as the hitches were rectified, the issue would be resolved. (NAN)

Biafran soldiers protest in Ibadan

HUNDREDS of angry Biafran military  pensioners in the country Monday besieged the Oyo State Secretariat saying they regretted fighting against Biafran soldiers to ensure the unity of the country.
They said if they had known that the country would repay them in this wicked manner, they would have fought for the survival and sovereignty of Biafra.
The retired soldiers who spoke through their Chairman, Mr.  Mr. Gabriel Oiakhena said, “we have been pushed to the wall. The families of over 500,000 soldiers who lost their lives in Biafra are suffering.
We who are alive are just living as destitute. Many of us have died because they did not have money to treat and fend for themselves. Senator David Mark has spent about twelve years and he has done nothing for us.
When the militants were pushed to the wall, they took up arms and fought with the last pint of their blood”.
Also speaking on the issue, another ex-soldier, Mr. Olatunji Johnson said they came to draw the attention of Federal Government to their 53 per cent unpaid arrears and other allowances.
To prevent breakdown of law and order, all gates leading to the secretariat complex were shut against the angry pensioners.

Armoured Personnel Carrier, five police Hilux Vans and scores of armed policemen were stationed at the entrance of the secretariat.
Displaying the injuries they sustained in the Biafran War and many placards condemning the discouraging attitude of the government, they said it was unfortunate that they were being treated in this inhuman manner after fighting for the unity of the country.
He said their mission to the office of Governor Abiola Ajimobi was to present a letter on their plight to him for onward delivery to President Goddluck Jonathan.
He said, “we will not allow the government to rest until our money and other entitlements are paid. Many of us are still being paid N10,000 as monthly pension while they are wasting millions over there. It is not fair”.
